A Connectivity Approach to Agricultural Diffuse Pollution in Tropical Montane Catchments Dominated by Swidden Landscapes

چکیده

Shifting cultivation is widely practiced in many tropical mountainous watersheds. Agricultural practices are changing with the intensification of activities and development industrial monocultures associated increasing land use pesticides fertilisers. These changes have consequences for evolution sediment transfers watersheds, resulting new vulnerabilities inhabitants. This article shows structural connectivity over 5 years village Houaylack-Vangven, located northern Laos, its potential links agricultural diffuse pollution. To develop a source-to-sink model to understand transfers, our method was based on open-access data various geographical tools. Field surveys were conducted identify areas vulnerable erosion transfers. The sources sinks then using remote sensing techniques image interpretation characterise rates. Finally, relationship between analysed by graph theory explore potentialities assessing exposure sinks. main results twofold: coincide at risk contamination fertilisers, increases source surfaces (swidden plots) due ongoing transition.

A small-scale land-sparing approach to conserving biological diversity in tropical agricultural landscapes.

Two contrasting strategies have been proposed for conserving biological diversity while meeting the increasing demand for agricultural products: land sparing and land sharing production systems. Land sparing involves increasing yield to reduce the amount of land needed for agriculture, whereas land-sharing agricultural practices incorporate elements of native ecosystems into the production syst...

Interventions for Achieving Sustainability in Tropical Forest and Agricultural Landscapes

The rapid expansion of commodity agriculture in tropical forest landscapes is a key driver of deforestation. To meet the growing demand from a more prosperous and expanding global population, it is imperative to develop sustainable commodity supply chains that support higher agricultural productivity, and that enable improved environmental, economic, and social outcomes. Interventions by commun...

Quantifying and sustaining biodiversity in tropical agricultural landscapes.

Decision-makers increasingly seek scientific guidance on investing in nature, but biodiversity remains difficult to estimate across diverse landscapes. Here, we develop empirically based models for quantifying biodiversity across space. We focus on agricultural lands in the tropical forest biome, wherein lies the greatest potential to conserve or lose biodiversity. We explore two questions, dra...

Soil macrofauna in agricultural landscapes dominated by the Quesungual Slash - and -

Running title: 23 Soil macrofauna in the 'Quesungual' agroforestry system 24 25 2 Abstract 26 Smallholder agroforestry systems often incorporate features that are associated with abundant, 27 diverse soil macrofauna populations. This study sampled soil macrofauna communities across 28 four major land uses present within agricultural landscapes where the Quesungual Slash-and-29 Mulch Agroforestr...
